Elrich pushes for termination of Dickerson incinerator contract by July

Money for a waste hauling contract is expected to be included in Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich’s fiscal year 2027 operating budget proposal next week as he seeks to deliver on his campaign promise to close the Dickerson incinerator before his term expires in December.

The Dickerson incinerator, also called the Resource Recovery Facility (RRF), has been in operation since 1995. County officials say approximately 60,000 tons of the county’s waste is processed and converted into energy there each year.

Elrich (D) has long pushed for the facility’s closure, citing concerns about the environmental impacts of incineration. But his most recent attempt to begin work on an alternative to the incinerator was shot down by the County Council as part of its deliberations on the fiscal year 2026 capital budget last year…
