Suspect in Deadly Arson to Remain in Loudoun Jail Despite Federal Warrant

The Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday that Jacob Bogatin, the man accused of burning down his Sterling townhome and two adjacent units, leading to the death of one of his neighbors, will remain in custody at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center despite a federal effort to take him into custody to face federal fraud charges.

Bogatin, 78, was arrested in connection to the Oct. 24, 2025, fire on Riptide Square that killed Madelaine Samantha Akers, 36. He is charged with arson and murder and is being held without bond in the Loudoun ADC.

When he was arrested, Bogatin was on supervised release on a 2003 charge of fraud being handled in Pennsylvania. Loudoun County prosecutors have said that Bogatin’s fraud charges were related to the activities of one of the highest-ranking bosses of the Russian mafia…
