Police warn of ‘distraction thefts’ in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Police in Montgomery County are issuing a warning after an increase in what they are calling “distraction thefts” that are specifically targeting older adults. Now, law enforcement is making sure you know how to protect yourself.

Police say the thefts often happen in shopping center and grocery store parking lots.

“Suspects may approach their victims with friendly conversation—asking for directions, offering compliments, or even placing ‘gifted’ jewelry on them,” MCPD said in a press release. “During this interaction, they use quick, deceptive movements to steal valuables the victim is already wearing.”…
