Major decision looms for Route 28 traffic congestion in Northern Virginia

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (7News) — A pivotal traffic decision could reshape commutes for thousands of drivers in Northern Virginia.

After years of planning and debate, the Prince William County Board of Supervisors is considering a new plan to address congestion along Route 28, following the cancellation of a previously proposed bypass project. The bypass, initially intended to divert traffic around the busiest stretches, was scrapped over concerns about cost, logistics, and coordination with neighboring jurisdictions.

Back on the Drawing Board

Route 28 through Prince William County has long been a bottleneck, especially during peak travel times. The board is now weighing a plan to widen approximately 2.5 miles of Route 28, from Liberia Avenue in Manassas to the Fairfax County line, expanding the road from four lanes to six.

Officials say the widening could cost around $400 million, though funding sources have not been finalized. County leaders are also considering the impact on businesses along the corridor, utility relocation, and coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and neighboring counties.
