School Board Committee Considers New Options for Language Instruction

Loudoun County School Board members on Monday reviewed data about the school division’s language instruction.

Currently, there are 15,828 students learning Spanish, 3,664 for French, 1,876 taking German, 1,141 in Latin, and 1,190 in American Sign Language (ASL) within LCPS. Spanish has trended upward by about 7% for the past few years, while French and Latin have seen declines. German is holding steady, and ASL enrollment slightly increased this year after a period of falling enrollment.

Jeff Rounsley, the division’s director of teaching and learning, said recently approved ASL positions likely contributed to the increase in sign language enrollment and that he expects further ASL growth next year…
