Maryland Governor Bans State Employees From Using Insider Information on Prediction Markets

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed an executive order Friday banning state government employees from using nonpublic information from their jobs to make money on prediction markets.

The order is effective immediately and applies to employees and contractors in Maryland’s Executive Branch, as well as appointees to state boards and commissions. Moore said the order also applies to himself. Violations can lead to termination for employees or contractors.

Prediction markets allow users to place wagers on real-world events. Moore said the order is meant to prevent public employees from using sensitive information learned through their official duties for personal financial gain…
