Open lunch policy stirs debate in Montgomery County Public Schools

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A decades old lunch policy in Montgomery County Public Schools is staying in place.

School leaders recently weighed the district’s Open Lunch Policy. It allows students at some high schools to leave campus for lunch. But board members recently debated whether the superintendent — instead of the board should now oversee the policy as it deals with school operations. They also discussed if the policy should be updated because it was originally established decades ago.

“1978 — a gallon of gas was 62-cents a gallon and the number on song was ‘Staying Alive’,” said Grace Rivera-Oven, School Board Chair, “This is an old policy.”…
