12-foot sinkhole forces closure near WNC county line

HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) — The North Carolina Department of Transportation reported that road washouts in parts of Southern Buncombe County and Henderson County led to the closure of Charlotte Highway (US-74) in both directions near the Buncombe and Henderson County line.

The closure is due to a severe road failure, where a 12-foot-deep hole was found beneath the roadway between Sugar Hollow Road and the Buncombe/Henderson County line.

The Fairview Volunteer Fire Department discovered the extensive damage, including the 12-foot-deep hole, while responding to a separate call.

Marked detours are directing U.S. 74A East drivers to Cane Creek Road, U.S. 25 South, Interstate 26 East, U.S. 64 East and up U.S. 74A, according to officials…
