Waynesville rebuilds new dog park on higher ground after Helene flooding

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Nearly two years after Helene destroyed Waynesville’s dog park, town leaders are officially reopening the popular community amenity on Tuesday, June 9. The dog park is in a new location designed to better withstand future flooding.

The new dog park spans nearly an acre and includes upgraded fencing, new shade structures, benches, water stations and separate areas for small and large dogs. Luke Kinsland, Waynesville’s recreation director, said seeing the park get a fresh start is already enough to excite residents.

“The reopening and relocation of the dog park is an incredible milestone in our recovery from Hurricane Helene,” said Kinsland. “While we lost a valued community asset during the storm, this project gave us the opportunity to rebuild in a location that is better suited for the future.”…
