Inmate dies after being found unresponsive in Buncombe jail

A 33-year-old man awaiting trial on a first-degree murder charge died Aug. 24 after being found unresponsive in his cell at the Buncombe County jail.

Douglas Michael Stroupe was found just after 1 p.m. and taken to Mission Hospital, where he was pronounced dead that afternoon.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an independent review of the circumstances surrounding Stroupe’s death. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has notified the SBI, the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office and Stroupe’s family…
