WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Waynesville detectives are sounding the alarm about a surge in cell phone scams targeting residents.
Police say one Waynesville resident unwittingly handed over more than $100,000 to criminals after a cell text communication scam, and detectives say embarrassment keeps many people from reporting the crimes. But police are asking victims to come forward so they can investigate and closely track criminal activity via texts to residents.
