Haywood County bridge repairs see progress for 2027 completion, more I-40 work ahead

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Another lane closure is coming to Canton near Exit 31 along the Interstate 40 corridor as the North Carolina Department of Transportation continues making progress on nine bridges in Haywood County.

As previously reported, announced in 2024 as part of the American Infrastructure and Reinvestment Act passed in November 2021, nine bridges in the county were slated to receive repairs to the old infrastructure.

“All of the bridges that are being replaced are being replaced because of assessments that were done that identified them for bridge replacement; they’ve been out there for several years and require maintenance,” said Scott Cook, assistant resident engineer with KCI, working for NCDOT. “So hopefully by replacing these structures with newer ones, they’re [residents] are gonna see less maintenance activity, which should mean less lane closures and impact to the traffic.”…
