Asheville’s Mountaineer Inn to see renovation and conversion; Tunnel Road sign to stay

ASHEVILLE – The Mountaineer Inn could soon see a facelift.

After being bought by the Seattle-based LOGE Camps for $6.1 million in May, the company has submitted a Level I project proposal to the city of Asheville, where the 1939 motel would see renovations to create a new cafe and bar, along with coworking space, fire pits, a gear rental area and a new outdoor deck.

The iconic neon sign featuring a bearded man wearing overalls and a floppy hat while leaning on a musket will remain along Tunnel Road, according to the company website.

LOGE Camps (pronounced “Lodge,” which stands for Live Outside, Go Explore) is a hotel and lodging company that emphasizes inspiring “people to get out and explore together,” according to the its website. The company was started as a Kickstarter project in 2017 and has grown to eight active locations in the U.S.

Speaking with the Citizen Times last May, LOGE executive vice president of brand and marketing Slate Olson said the goal of the renovations is to keep “iconic aspects of this place alive.”
