Buncombe County is observing Black Legacy Month, honoring the accomplishments and challenges of Black Americans. The county is evaluating its past, present, and future work in advancing racial equity, as outlined in its Racial Equity Action Plan. The aim is to recognize the past and work towards a more inclusive future.
In 2023, Buncombe County started several programs to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion. These programs are featured during the Black Legacy Month celebrations. One program was a five-part series on the County’s Tapped In radio show, discussing the Community Reparations Commission’s work.
The 2023 Reparations Summit was another key event. Videos from the summit are available for those interested in the county’s equity work. These videos offer insights into the county’s dedication to addressing issues impacting the Black community.
Buncombe County will honor Black Legacy Month throughout February and the rest of the year. The county urges residents to learn more about issues impacting the Black community locally and nationally. Events at County libraries are being organized to educate the public about Black Legacy Month.
