Asheville Parks & Recreation (APR) will hold a community meeting on February 21, 2024. The meeting will discuss the decision to keep the outdoor pool in Malvern Hills Park closed this year. The meeting will be at Lucy S. Herring Elementary School and is open to all Asheville residents. The decision came after officials stated that the old pool was beyond safe repair.

APR Director D. Tyrell McGirt discussed this issue with City Council members on February 8. The presentation slides are online, and the meeting can be watched on the City of Asheville’s YouTube channel. This decision is part of a larger plan for the APR system, which includes future investments in Malvern Hills Park and other city recreational facilities.

The plan, ‘Recreate Asheville: Shaping Our City’s Parks,’ is in its second phase of engagement. More public feedback opportunities, including community workshops, are planned for March 28. The final plan is expected to be presented to the City Council in June 2024.

Asheville Parks & Recreation manages over 65 public parks, playgrounds, and open spaces in the city. The department also oversees recreation centers, swimming pools, sports fields and courts, and community centers. These facilities offer wellness, education, and culture-related programs for residents of all ages.
