On February 8, 2024, the Mayor of Montreat held a meeting attended by over 20 people. The meeting addressed various topics, including property issues, environmental concerns, and administrative reports. The Mayor stated that the official meeting minutes would be available in the next month’s agenda packet.

Montreat resident, Gary Higgins, discussed his Harmony Road property at the public forum. He promised to limit disturbance while building a driveway across Little Piney Branch. Brad Hestir, the Tree Board Chair, talked about the decline of the American chestnut tree and efforts to develop a new strain. He invited Montreat residents to the American Chestnut Foundation Planting Workshop on March 19.

Mary Standaert expressed concerns about potential voting difficulties for Montreat residents due to inconsistencies between voter registration cards and photo IDs. She also questioned if approving an ordinance amendment for the driveway could set a precedent. The Mayor clarified that such a change would apply to all, not just Mr. Higgins. Shirley Mitchell worried about future homeowners using Mr. Higgins’ driveway, but the Mayor and staff explained that this was not possible due to the ordinance and properties.
