Henderson County Public Schools (HCPS) in North Carolina has reported that 24 of its educators have received the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification. This is a top-level professional certification in K-12 education. Among the 24 educators, 10 have received the certification for the first time, and 14 have been re-certified. The certification process, which is optional, can take one to three years and involves a comprehensive assessment of teachers’ and counselors’ skills and knowledge.
National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) are required to complete a Maintenance of Certification (MOC) every five years. This requires a 40-60 hour commitment and involves documenting professional growth experiences that have impacted student learning and involved collaboration. The certification process aims to promote continuous professional development for educators.
The 24 educators will be acknowledged at the regular monthly meeting of the Henderson County Public School Board on Monday, Feb. 12. The list of educators includes Holly Kolarova, Brittany Garber, Teresa Rhodes, and others who earned their certification for the first time in 2023, and Wendy Riley, Erica Van Autreve, Linda Carrillo, and others who achieved re-certification.
