HENDERSONVILLE – Members of the Henderson County Board of Education made 15 minor revisions to the board’s policies during the Feb. 12 meeting, and one of the biggest topics of discussion was student surveys.
After debating for several minutes about how the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey and the National Youth Tobacco Survey both had what board members called “very invasive” questions for students, it was determined that the policies for those surveys didn’t need changes, since parents already had the option to opt in or opt out of those.

The board policy states, “As a part of the annual notification, parents will be effectively notified that they may opt out of any of the following,” and it lists all of things parents can opt out of, including “their child’s participation in any protected information survey given as part of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System or National Youth Tobacco Survey.”
