Bird flu detected in dead ducks in NC lake

WEAVERVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – Dead ducks found at Lake Louise have tested positive for bird flu, according to officials.

According to the Town of Weaverville, the town was told by biologists with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission two dead ducks found at Lake Louise and sent for testing in January tested positive for Avian Influenza.

Bird flu is not a hazard to humans who are around infected birds or in or around the water, but the disease can be serious and fatal for poultry, backyard flocks and other waterfowl.

Members of the public are discouraged from touching wild birds they suspect may have bird flu and are encouraged to report sick waterfowl or domestic poultry to the NC Wildlife Helpline at 866-318-2401.

Sick or dying captive birds should be reported to your local veterinarian, the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Science (NCDA&CS) Veterinary Division at (919) 707-3250 or the North Carolina Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory System at (919) 733-3986.
