Editor’s note: On Jan. 23, Brevard Public Schools discussed discipline rates at a work session, where once again, statistics showed Black students were disproportionately disciplined compared to their peers — a trend that has been consistent in the district since at least 2018. Though most board members were quick to say the numbers couldn’t have been influenced by racism or unconscious bias, South Brevard NAACP President Bennie Jackson Jr. questioned that.
Over the last several years in Brevard Public Schools, there has been no improvement in the excessive discipline of Black students. Black students represent about 15% of the total school population but about 35% of the discipline referrals in Brevard Public Schools.
There are many theories circulating in our communities because of statements being made by county community leaders about school discipline, statements not based on proper root cause techniques.
Numerous university studies reveal that excessive discipline can have a negative effect on students. It can reduce educational outcomes, increase aggression, damage self-esteem and impair cognitive and emotional development.
