Explainer: ‘Flying saucer’ clouds captured over WNC; here’s how they formed

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) – Viewer cameras caught wave clouds over the mountains this week. These wave clouds can take various forms. Some of the most impressive ones are called Altocumulus Standing Lenticular, or ACSL. These clouds often look like pancakes, or even stacks of pancakes, and at times have been mistaken for unusual aircraft or “flying saucers.”
