Vince Luvara picks up first win with Hampden-Sydney

The offense ignited late on Saturday, as Hampden-Sydney put up 30 points in the fourth quarter to beat Brevard College 51-30. New head coach Vince Luvara picks up his first win with the Tigers on the road.

“Proud of the team’s finish,” said Luvara. “A lot of teams would have quit there in the third quarter. They finished and that is what being a champion is all about.”

A big part of that was due to junior quarterback and team captain Carter Sido. The Dallas, Texas native tossed for a career-high 255 yards and four touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns were caught by senior wide receiver Austin Fernandez, who had 99 yards on the day. Meanwhile, sophomore running back Terry Hicks added career highs of his own, putting up 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Vince Luvara, Tigers get started

Brevard got things started early, taking the opening possession and driving 79 yards before Chancellor Lee-Parker scored on a four-yard run. Vince Luvara and the Hampden-Sydney Tigers answered on their first possession. In eight plays, the Tigers went 66 yards, finishing with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Sido to Fernandez. Getting the ball back quickly, the Tigers added a second touchdown on their next possession, with Sido connecting with Sutto Lasso over the middle for a 12-yard pass.
