3rd person charged with ethnic intimidation in alleged West Asheville assault surrenders

ASHEVILLE – A person wanted on an assault charge has turned herself in to local authorities following a fight in a public meeting room at West Asheville library in June.

On Sept. 17, Emily Kathryn Murphy, 38, surrendered to Asheville police on ethnic intimidation charges. She was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility and released under a written promise to appear issued by the magistrate.

Murphy is one of three individuals charged after three attendees were assaulted at a “Strategic Lessons from the Palestinian Resistance” seminar, which was part of the fifth annual Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair on July 29.

Asheville police officers responded to reports of a fight in progress at the Haywood Road library, the Citizen Times previously reported. Three 911 calls, including one from a librarian, were received by the police.

According to police, between 80 and 100 people attended the event.

Tensions flared when an attendee, Monica Buckley, 48, was livestreaming the speech leading to punching and kicking.
