A retirement gig turned into an act of service, CNY couple hauling donations to those hard hit by Helene in North Carolina

CENTRAL SQUARE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Steve and Mari Curry launched their Big Dawg’s Hauling and Transport company in late September. It was supposed to be a retirement gig, hauling cars, boats, and RVs across the country and getting to do some traveling at the same time.

Then Hurricane Helene swept across North Carolina and Mari Curry felt they needed to help. They decided they would collect donations and haul them down to Lake Lure, a place near and dear to their hearts.

“It’s a family vacation spot,” Mari explained. “My son was married there, my brother renewed his vows there, we have photos there. We go there for vacation. So, it’s a special place and a beautiful community.”

When Mari posted their donation drive on Big Dawg’s Hauling and Transport Facebook page, she was only expecting a few donations. Instead, she was surprised by the hundreds that came to her house with donations for people they had never met.

“People have been super emotional because they want to do something. We’ve just been overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity. It’s crazy. We’ve shed quite a few tears here too,” Mari said.
