Lake Lure, Chimney Rock still reeling from historic storm

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Nearly four weeks after Hurricane Helene pummeled the North Carolina mountain region, the devastating effects are still being felt in the towns of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. Silt is still visible everywhere and pockets of cell service are scarce.

Lake Lure Town Commissioner Jim Proctor said residents in the area and surrounding counties are still focused on recovery efforts and have not fully gotten around to the rebuilding phase yet.

Chimney Rock Village Mayor Peter O’Leary said that while the cleanup and recovery efforts have gone well, there is still a lot of work to be done. “The town was completely changed forever.”

Lured Market & Grill owner Paul Brock is one of many small business owners in Lake Lure whose lives have been turned upside down in the wake of Hurricane Helene.
