NEWPORT — The reopening timeline for the section of railroad track that runs east from Newport through Asheville, North Carolina, and on to Grovestone, North Carolina, has changed.
Norfolk Southern had initially said that section of track, referred to as the AS Line, would be open by Jan. 31, 2025, but that has now changed to March 31, 2025, according to Norfolk Southern Senior Communications Manager Heather Garcia.
Discussing the trestle that fell on the east end of Newport, she said, “The two spans that fell are going to be replaced.”
She said that the gravel roadways that are visible on each side of the bridge are to allow the railroad workers and equipment to access the trestle, so they can complete the needed repairs.
