More snow is headed to Western North Carolina, according to National Weather Service reports.
Higher elevation areas toward the Tennessee border are likely to see the most snow. However, meteorologists with the NWS say that snow isn’t out of the question for Asheville and Buncombe County.
Here’s what to know about the weather.
Weather hazards in WNC
A hazardous weather alert was issued by the NWS at 5:30 a.m. Dec. 19 for Avery, Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood and Graham counties. Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, Dec. 20-21, scattered snow showers will move in from the northwest, mainly confined to the Tennessee border.
One to three inches of snow is possible in higher elevations near the border, and the snowfall will create slippery and potentially snow covered roadways Friday evening.
Asheville, WNC weekend weather
The hazardous weather alert was not issued for Buncombe County. The NWS forecast shows a 30% chance of showers mainly between 3-5 p.m. on Friday, with a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 8 p.m. and a slight chance of snow showers between 8 p.m.-2 a.m. The overall chance of precipitation is 20%, with a high of 47 degrees and low of 26 degrees.
