Missing man dead after deputy involved shooting in WNC

It was mayhem in the mountains when a man who had been reported missing earlier this month was killed in a deputy involved shooting in Western North Carolina.

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a suspicious man at the Harmon Den Horse Camp around 3PM, Friday. Upon arrival, deputies encountered 42 year old, Michael Shope.

The Sheriff’s Office says her tried to stab a deputy and the deputy then fired on Shope. He was hit and was pronounced dead at the scene. Shope had been reported missing in early December and had last been seen at a motel with his 9 year old daughter.

Officials confirmed that the girl was found safe and unharmed. The incident is under investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau Of Investigation.
