Asheville City Schools may be affected by major, global breach of student and staff data

ASHEVILLE – A major data breach of teachers’ and students’ personal information in December may impact Asheville City Schools and other public schools across the state, according to a Jan. 9 letter to ACS parents and staff.

Using a contract employee’s credentials, a hacker breached the data of the PowerSchool information system that North Carolina public schools use to track real-time student data, grades, attendance, transcripts and more, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

“A PowerSchool-contracted employee’s credentials were compromised via malware. This allowed unauthorized access by the threat actors,” NCDPI said in message to Asheville City Schools…
