Waynesville leaders propose requirement changes to new construction in flood zones

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Waynesville town leaders are considering a proposal to protect new construction in flood zones by raising required elevation levels.

Existing regulations require new structures to be raised one foot above what is called the “base flood elevation.” The proposal calls for two feet to be added to the “base flood elevation.”

Residents have voiced concerns about potential costs and insurance. The town is operating under 2012 flood maps and leaders say much has changed in terms of development. So before taking any action, the town board wants new flood maps drawn up…
