Latest round of winter weather in Carolinas to bring snow, wintry mix

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The latest round of winter weather will likely bring snow to the mountains and a wintry mix to the Charlotte area on Wednesday.

  • Today: Wintry mix of light rain/snow, 30s
  • Thursday: Morning snow, afternoon sun
  • Weekend: Mostly sunny, milder temps in 50s

Wednesday is a First Alert Weather Day as accumulating snow is forecast for the mountains and north of I-40, where temps will be near 32 degrees all day. South of I-40, where temperatures will be in the 30s – but above freezing – a mix of rain and wet snow is likely with mainly plain, cold rain toward the South Carolina border. Outside of the mountains, there will be little – if any – snow accumulation Wednesday.

As low pressure cranks up off the Carolina coast, colder air will move in tonight, sending temperatures down in the teens in the mountains and 20s – well below freezing – everywhere else. With colder air in place, a second band of precipitation – this time all snow – will drift out of the mountains and through the foothills and Piedmont Thursday morning. That’s when the metro area stands its best chance to see accumulating snow.

Between what little falls today outside of the mountains and the quick burst that’s expected Thursday morning, final accumulations will be on the lighter side. In the mountains, 2-3 inches of snow is forecast, while in the foothills, along I-40, 1-2 inches of snow probably accumulates with no more than one inch around the Charlotte metro area and points south.

Thursday afternoon will bring sunshine along with a gusty breeze and temperatures in the upper 30s. Teens and single digits are forecast for Thursday night under clear skies…
