State denies Novant bid to build South Asheville diagnostic center at former Gold’s Gym site

Nonprofit hospital system Novant Health cannot build a diagnostic center in South Asheville, the North Carolina health department has decided, saying that it would have duplicated services in the region.

The March 28 decision from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Health Service Regulation came nearly five months after Novant applied for the center through the state’s controversial Certificate of Need process.

Novant was eyeing the former Gold’s Gym in South Asheville as a location. It was meant to serve Buncombe and Henderson counties and would have included a CT scanner and two ultrasound units, three mammography units and a bone density unit…
