Schools boost summer programs to recover learning loss post-Helene

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Students have yet to make up for the weeks they lost amid the aftermath of Helene. As this school year is just weeks from ending, districts are enhancing their efforts over the summer.

The upcoming months are crucial in trying to make up the ground.

“There’s a lot to make up,” Read 2 Succeed (R2S) Asheville/Buncombe County Co-Executive Director Ashley Allen said. “In a typical school year, you’d see kindergarteners by this time sounding out CVC words and decoding. Now, they might just begin with digraphs to begin that decoding.”…
