‘Our farm wiped off map from Helene:’ ASAP reports impact to small Western NC farmers

A new report sheds light on the lasting impact of Tropical Storm Helene for the small farmers of Western North Carolina.

The Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, an Asheville-based nonprofit, released the report May 7. It paints a picture in numbers of the lingering effects of September’s deadly storm and includes harrowing first-hand accounts from farmers themselves.

“Our farm was wiped off the map from Helene,” the report quoted one unnamed farmer as saying. “The farm was turned into a beach overnight.”…
