ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — For Juneteenth today, there are a number of observances in the mountains.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County has hosted events this week including a celebration through song at the Shiloh Friendship Center featuring Mary D. Williams.
“So, our celebration today, it starts off with Mary D. Williams who is bringing us really a history of African American and American history through song. Songs that were really founded and rooted in the time of enslavement but have been part of the African American community all the way through the civil rights movement,” said MLK Association president Oralene Simmons and vice president Jonathan McCoy.
Juneteenth events continue this evening with a gala at AB Tech Community College and Juneteenth on the Block at Eagle and Market Streets in downtown Asheville…
