Troopers ramp up patrols to enforce truck detour amid I-40 closure

MADISON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Troopers in Madison County, North Carolina, have stepped up patrols to stop truckers from sidestepping the recommended I-26 detour around the I-40 closure in Tennessee.

The increased overall traffic volume is at the same level as it was in the months after Hurricane Helene, when I-40 closed following a washout near the North Carolina-Tennessee state line. This time, a rockslide and flooding have caused a shutdown of the interstate in that area.

On Friday, News 13 watched a state trooper turn around a truck at the Ingles parking lot near Marshall along NC-US 25/70 heading towards Hot Springs. The trucker had to head back towards Asheville and Weaverville to take the recommended detour route…
