New owners aim to build on Western N.C. retailer’s legacy

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. — While Jake Ballard and Kyle Robins decided to get into home furnishings retail, Doug and Lorrie Worrell were looking for a buyer that would continue their family’s legacy.

In May, Ballard and Robins’ Blue Ridge Legacy acquired High Country Furniture & Design, a four-store outfit that got its start in 1999 when Doug Worrell‘s mother, Anne, opened Cabin Fever in this town about 30 miles southwest of Asheville. Today, it has two stores and its Anne’s Attic clearance and consignment store in Waynesville, and one store in Hendersonville, just south of Asheville. The Worrells’ adult children had moved away, and they were ready for their next chapter in life.

“The business has meant so much to me and my family,” Worrell said. “The relationships we formed over the past 20 years are priceless. We’ve seen generations of families keep coming back to shop with us, and our employees are the best I’ve ever worked with.”…
