NC town posts letter explaining water rate increase

CANTON, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – The town manager of Canton posted a letter on the town’s website and Facebook in response to concerns about recent water rate increases.

The letter by Town Manager Lisa Stinnett says Canton has faced much adversity in the last few years, citing damage from Hurricane Helene back in 2024, Tropical Storm Fred in 2021, and the closing of its paper mill in 2023.

The letter says the mill’s closing in particular is causing costs to rise, costing the town over a million dollars in annual revenue. The town says the mill had an agreement to treat wastewater for Canton at no cost, meaning Canton had some of the lowest water and sewer rates in the state…
