‘It provides a sense of community’: Nonprofit providing free produce to Helene victims

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — As western North Carolina continues to reel from Helene, many are struggling with food insecurity.

Six days a week, the nonprofit Bounty & Soul hosts produce markets across Buncombe County to supply free fruits and vegetables to people in need.

“Many times, pantries that serve people experiencing food insecurity are sharing shelf-stable food and foods that sometimes are highly preserved and full of sugar,” Paula Sellars, the deputy director of Bounty & Soul, said. “Bounty & Soul is really devoted to providing fresh food so that it supports the health of individuals experiencing food insecurity.”…
