Families ask for help searching for remains after cemetery was washed away during Helene

YANCEY COUNTY, N.C. — When Amber McFetters set off to volunteer with the nonprofit Hope Mills after Hurricane Helene, she knew she was in it for the long haul, especially after meeting neighbors in hard-hit areas like Yancey County.

“We have made friends with a lot of the locals,” McFetters said. “We call them our mountain mamas and papas.”
