Opinion: Here’s an idea for UNC Asheville — Consider a performing arts center on the wooded property it plans to develop, or the university’s Broadway site

When it comes to the University of North Carolina Asheville woods development saga, not much has been exactly transparent on the whole deal.

Back in January, a reader asked me in my Answer Man column what was going on in the university-owned woods in the Five Points area known as the South Campus walking trails, as people had started noticing heavy machinery digging up soil samples and trampling plants.

At the time, university spokesperson Brian Hart said UNCA was “taking steps to better understand the characteristics of 90 acres of undeveloped portions of university property. This includes assessing boundaries, topography, land composition, and utilities. To support this process, the university has authorized an experienced external vendor to conduct a thorough exploratory assessment, which will require removing a minimal number of trees and collecting soil samples.”…
