After navigating five years of life’s challenges, including the global pandemic, the Tried Stone Adult Choir is returning to the local music scene with renewed spirit and a message of hope.
On Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 4 p.m., the choir will host a special anniversary celebration concert titled “Gospel Soul in Motion 2025,” at Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church, 100 Carroll Avenue in Asheville.
This year marks the choir’s 65th anniversary, which is a milestone rooted in decades of musical excellence and ministry. The Gospel Soul in Motion concert is a revival of a historic tradition that began in the 1960s. In those early days, choirs from across the region would gather in Asheville to celebrate the vibrant gospel legacy of Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church. Elder John R. Hayes, one of the program’s most memorable emcees, was known for his dynamic introductions that signaled the start of the much-anticipated choir march.
Under the direction of J. Cornell Proctor, who also serves as the church’s Minister of Music, the choir traces its origins to July 1960, when it began as the Tried Stone Junior Choir. Young singers gathered on Saturday mornings, emulating the sounds of the renowned Tried Stone Senior Choir. Over time, the group evolved into the Tried Stone Young Adult Choir, eventually traveling across the country to perform alongside celebrated gospel artists while maintaining their strong ministry at home in Asheville.
