This top-ranked dive bar is Asheville’s oldest: a den of cheap beer, punk rock and dogs

If Asheville has an underbelly, the Burger Bar might qualify as its hairy, lint-filled navel — a dive bar with peeling turquois paint that advertises itself as “dark and dirty” and looks like it might fall over if you slam the door too hard.

This gloriously unpretentious watering hole dates to 1960, the oldest in Asheville, and despite its name has never served burgers. “No burgers, all bar” serves as its apt motto.

The decor inside ranges from an Elvis bust perched on the bar to framed portraits of honorary bar dogs gone over the Rainbow Bridge: Visenya, Jack, Compass, Snatch and Luther…
