UNC Asheville workshop addresses landslide hazard prediction and communication challenges

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Landslides are among the most dangerous hazards in western North Carolina, yet predicting and communicating them remains difficult. That challenge is being addressed at a two-day weather and landslides workshop at UNC Asheville.

“With Hurricane Helene, we knew the biggest problem was going to be water,” said Trisha Palmer, warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg. “As the rainfall predictions continued to increase, we started messaging that we were going to have large and potentially damaging debris flows.”
