Remembering Hurricane Frances: 21 years since tornadoes and floods hit North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — On Sept. 8, 2004, 21 years ago, the remnants of hurricane Frances produced 11 tornadoes in North Carolina, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Tropical Cyclone Report.

The maximum reported rainfall was at Linville Falls, N.C., at 18.07 inches, according to NOAA’s report. This was part of the rainfall exceeding 10 inches along the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina and northeastern Georgia.

The storm also produced heavy rain and flooding across the Asheville area. Asheville’s total rainfall during Hurricane Frances from Aug. 25, 2004, to Sept. 8, 2004, was 4.64 inches, according to NOAA’s report. Black Mountain received 14.62 inches of rainfall.
