Asheville city leaders approve $12M loan while awaiting federal Helene reimbursements

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Asheville City Council approved several Helene-related resolutions during its Sept. 9 meeting, including a loan of more than $12 million from a state program intended to help local governments while they await federal reimbursements.

Councilmembers unanimously approved a resolution and budget amendment totaling $12,065,038 to receive loan money from the State of North Carolina’s Cash Flow Loan Program, the third such loan the city has received through the program.

“Though these funds cannot offset revenue lost due to Helene, they will improve the city’s cash flow. This funding round is larger than previous ones, as we’ve advanced several projects recently,” Finance Director Tony McDowell said during Tuesday’s meeting…
