ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Thursday marks 24 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans. Below is a list of ceremonies taking place across western North Carolina to honor the victims, survivors and first responders.

The Asheville Fire Department held a 9/11 remembrance ceremony that featured opening remarks by Fire Chief Mike Cayse, a moment of silence, the ringing of bells and the raising of flags.
A crowd gathered to honor those lost in the attacks and remember those who continue to serve. The ceremony paid tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives to save thousands of people in the Twin Towers and those involved in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.
“Nearly 3,000 lives were lost that day, and for many of us, myself included, the pain and the memory of it all remain as clear as it was yesterday,” said Cayse. “While the loss was immense and felt by every American family, we in the fire service feel a unique and profound connection to that day.”…
