Old Fort honors efforts in year since Helene

OLD FORT, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As the first anniversary of Hurricane Helene approaches, Old Fort Mayor Pam Snypes reflected on the town’s recovery and resilience.

The storm, which struck on Sept. 27, 2024, caused widespread damage and left many residents without homes or belongings. In the immediate aftermath, the community rallied together to assist neighbors and begin rebuilding, Snypes said.

“This past year has been incredibly challenging — but we are not only surviving, we are thriving,” Snypes said in a message posted to Facebook. “Old Fort is growing. New businesses have opened their doors, and new families have chosen to call our town home. That growth will continue because of the strength and spirit of this community.”…
