Despite government shutdown, Helene housing program to ‘continue as normal,’ state says

A federally funded housing program launched in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene will continue uninterrupted — at least for now — despite the recent shutdown of the federal government, according to the state’s Department of Commerce.

“At the present time, our operations to support housing recovery in Western North Carolina can continue as normal for the near term,” David Rhoades, a department spokesperson, told the Citizen Times in an Oct. 2 email.

Rhoades said the state’s Renew NC Single Family Housing Program, which launched in June, will continue to operate with funds allocated by the North Carolina General Assembly. HUD also has “contingency procedures” in place to cover federal funding lapses, he added…
