Inmate who escaped faces federal indictment on eight charges including first-degree murder

ASHEVILLE, NC. (WLOS) — The man accused of killing a Cherokee County detention employee now faces federal charges in addition to state charges.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Kelvin Simmons was an inmate who escaped while being taken for a medical visit outside the jail on June 30. They claim he pushed one detention employee, took his gun, and shot a second Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office employee, Francisco Flattes.

According to court paperwork, Simmons then stole a car and led police on a chase that ended in a standoff in Macon County.
